Finding a Location for an Engagement Session

Finding a location for a professional photography session can sometimes seem intimidating. Maybe you have never had a professional session before, or you have and you want to try something different. A few things a photographer might look for may be different than what you as a client would look for.

As a client, you should think of locations that mean something to you. Finding a meaningful location makes the photographs so much more valuable to you. Maybe you visit here often, its an activity you do together, and something you love.

This secret location is actually a popular hiking location in Niagara Falls. It is a little more off the beaten track since you have to do a little bit of a hike to get down to the water, but it is definitely worth it once you do.

For the Adventurous

These particular clients had come to this popular hiking spot a few times together as a couple, and love the views, the trees and enjoyed hiking here together throughout their relationship. We enjoyed taking photos in the trees, walking along the pebble beach, and looking out at the water.

The scenes made for some incredible pictures, and this couple was so awesome in trying out all of my ideas. After our amazing session down by the water it was time to hike back out, which doesn't take long but there are many, many steps to climb.

Tips on choosing this location

• This location gets very busy on weekends during the day, with hikers, and local fishermen so don't be surprised if you are not alone on the beach.

• Late spring through fall would be great seasons to take photos here with all the foliage

• The sun sets here a bit earlier, so it can get dark faster, plan your session at least 2 hours before sunset.

• After a rain it will be muddy, bring extra shoes your not afraid to get muddy

• There are bugs, especially in the evening so be prepared

Finding the trail

The trail is called the Upper Whirlpool trail in Niagara Falls, and part of the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve. It is located along the Niagara River Parkway in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
